Aanjibimaadizing is now able to administer SNAP for Mille Lacs Band Members and First-Generation descendant households who meet eligibility guidelines in Aitkin, Benton, Chisago, Crow Wing, Kanabec, Mille Lacs, Morrison, and Pine counties!

In Anoka, Hennepin and Ramsey counties, the Aanjibimaadizing office can assist with a courtesy application, but final eligibility will be determined by the county of residence.

The SNAP program is also available in all 87 Minnesota counties. All counties accept client applications, determines eligibility, and determines benefit levels in accordance with state and federal regulations.

What is the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program?

SNAP is a federal program that helps Minnesotans with low incomes get the food that’s needed for sound nutrition and well-balanced meals.

SNAP helps low-income people buy the food they need for good health. You may be able to get SNAP benefits if you are:

• Working for low wages or working part-time;
• Unemployed;
• Receiving welfare or other public assistance payments;
• Elderly or disabled and are low-income;
• or Homeless.

The program provides support to help stretch your household food budget. It is not intended to meet all of your household’s food
needs. It is a supplement. If you are approved for SNAP, you can use your benefits at many stores, farmers markets and senior dining
sites.

SNAP eligibility depends on your household’s size and income. SNAP eligibility depends on your household’s income. Most types of income are counted. There are many deductions from income that are allowed under SNAP.

The amount of benefits you get is based on your income, expenses and the number of people in your household.

How to Apply

Come into an agency and complete a Combined Application Form, have a Combined Application Form mailed to you, complete an online Combined Application Form (eDocs), or complete an application online through MNbenefits.

How to Submit an Application

You can come in or drop-off at an agency, mail or fax back to an agency, or submit an application through MNbenefits.

Interview

An interview is needed for SNAP. SNAP applicants can complete an interview in person or over the phone. Other
programs may require a face-to-face interview.

Filing Date

The application process begins with the completion of page number 1 of the Combined Application Form containing the
name, address and signature of the applicant or the submittal of a MNbenefits application. It is important to submit your
application as soon as possible.

Expedited SNAP

SNAP may be made available within five business days for the following units:
• Units with less than $150 in monthly gross income and $100 or less in liquid assets.
• Destitute migrant or seasonal farm worker units who have $100 or less in liquid assets.
• Units whose combined monthly gross income and liquid assets are less than their monthly housing cost(s) and the applicable standard utility deduction if the unit is entitled to it.

Verification:

• Verification of the applicant’s identity is needed to process expedited SNAP. The agency may be able to verify identity electronically.

How Do I Get My Benefits?

Most food benefits are distributed through Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT), which is similar to a debit card. Each month, your EBT account is credited with your benefits. During the month, you use your card to purchase food at enrolled grocery stores. You swipe your EBT card through a point-of-sale terminal and the purchases are deducted from your account balance. You may authorize an additional person to use your EBT card.

SNAP benefits can be used to buy food, plants, and seeds to grow food for you or your family. You can also use your EBT card at the Farmer’s Market to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables. They may also be used at authorized sites for Meals on Wheels and congregate dining.
